Career Tips for College Students

How to Choose a Career Path

Job hunting is a stressful time for everyone, and this is especially true for college graduates. It can be difficult to make the transition from work to school, and you will need to plan out your strategy to find a job just as you planned out your education. Some tips to getting the job you want are discussed below.

Jobs Vs. Career

Make sure you know the difference between a job and career when you are deciding what you want to do with your life. For example, a career would be a police officer or lawyer. A job is a specific position within a field like a detective with the NYPD. Most online job search engines will list the position rather than the actual career, so deciding on a job will help you to find a position and will give you a more focused sense of direction in your job search.

Questions When Choosing a Career

When you are trying to choose a career, try and ask yourself a variety of questions to get a better sense of what exactly it is you want to do. Some possible questions to ask yourself include:

  • What am I good at?
  • What are my weaknesses?
  • What do I like to do for fun?
  • Do I believe that there is something that needs to be done?
  • What types of companies are you interested in working for?

Write down the answers to these questions and take your answers to heart.

Career Testing

Career testing can help you to choose between multiple careers, and career aptitude tests can help you to find out your areas of interests. Many of these tests can be taken at a college career center or a local job center. These tests should also be taken as purely a suggestion and not as the deciding factor for what you do as a final career.
