College Admission Application Tips

How to Prepare for Your College Admission Application

Applying for college is a stressful time for a high school junior or senior. The information below will help you to complete the application and reduce anxiety that is often produced with this time period.

Providing General Information

Like most other applications, the college admission application will want to know general information like your address, schools you attended, and contact information. They will also want to know about your high school career and education, some of which will include:

  • Extracurricular activities
  • Grades
  • Classes
  • SAT or ACT scores
  • Community service work
  • Jobs

You may want to have your school counselor check over a draft in order to ensure that you have completed this form correctly.

Developing a Personal Statement

A personal statement is also required in a college admission application, and this tells about why you want to attend the university, your career goals, and any other information that would make you a good candidate for admission. Try and use detail and avoid generalities. Also don’t get hung up on the topic and pick something that is meaningful to you.

Getting Letters of Recommendation

Many colleges and universities will require you to send in letters of recommendation from teachers to supplement your application. Coaches or managers at work may also be good people to ask, and advisors for community service activities may also be able to provide insightful and helpful information. Make sure you ask your writers well in advance to make sure that they have the time to write a stellar letter on your behalf.
