College Admission Interview Tips

How to Prepare for a College Admissions Interview

College admission interviews are designed for students to show off their skills and knowledge while explaining why they would be a great student at a selected university. Private institutions are specifically known for requiring interviews, and this process often causes significant stress on students, as they are often very nervous and have little experience with an interview process. By following a few simple tips, you will be prepared to ace your college admission interview.

State Your Purpose

The college admission interview is essential in order to display your interest in a particular college or university. It gives students the chance to tell the admissions board about why they deserve to be admitted to the university and about their future dreams and aspirations. This type of information can generally not be gauged by looking at a student’s grades and test scores alone. Students should think of this interview as a great opportunity for them, and if they look at it from that standpoint the may be less nervous and more comfortable during the actual interview.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Practicing will make you much less nervous about the interview process. Think about how you will answer standard questions ahead of time to prepare yourself. Some questions you may be asked include:

  • Why do you want to attend this school?
  • What is your greatest strength?
  • What is your biggest weaknesses?
  • Where do you see yourself in ten years?
  • How would you describe your high school experience?
  • What accomplishment are you most proud of?
  • What has been your biggest challenge in high school?

Choose a family member of friend that you trust to act as the interview and ask you a selection of questions. This mock interviewing may help you to become familiar with how you will answer questions during the actual interview, but try not to make your answers sound too rehearsed.
