ESL instructors that wish to teach at the elementary or high school level will need to have earned their state teacher certification, and they will also have had to have taken additional coursework in the area of second language learning in order to earn an ESL endorsement. ESL Teaching Opportunities with Adult Learners
ESL instructors that wish to teach at the adult education level will need to have earned at least a Bachelor[s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) or Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Some majors for the undergraduate degree may be English, linguistics, or another related topic with a TESL certification.
ESL Teaching Opportunities at Colleges and Universities
ESL instructors that wish to teach at the college or university level will need to have earned at least a Master’s degree in TESOL or TESL. In many cases, a PhD is preferred for teaching at this advanced level. Individuals in these positions may work with students from other countries who do not speak English fluently. Many of these students at the college and university level struggle with terminology in their particular subject of study, and that is where ESL instructors can be extremely helpful.
ESL Teaching Opportunities Abroad
For individuals that wish to travel the world, a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) or TESOL certificate will allow them to accomplish that goal. Many students also have the opportunity to study abroad and receive an internationally recognized TEFL or TESOL certificate. Students can study in a variety of countries, earn their certificate, and then stay in-country to teach. Otherwise they can choose to move on to a new country to gain even more new experiences
