High School Information in Maryland

The state of Maryland has a high school graduation rate of over 88%, making it one of the best in the nation. The national average is closer to 83%. The state has created rigorous educational standards to ensure that graduates are prepared to enter college or the workforce in order to better contribute to the economy within the state.

High School Graduation Requirements in Maryland

In order to award a diploma from a Maryland public school system, students need to have earned at least 21 credits. Those credits are broken down as follows:

  • English (4 credits)
  • Mathematics (3 credits including Algebra and Geometry)
  • Science (3 credits, including 1 credit in Biology and 2 lab courses)
  • Social Studies (3 credits including U.S. History, World History, and Government)
  • Fine Arts (1 credit)
  • Physical Education (.5 credits)
  • Health (.5 credits)
  • Technology Education (1 credit)

Students must also complete one of two other sets of courses. The first option is to complete 2 credits in either foreign language or advanced technology and 3 credits of electives. The second option is to complete 4 credits of career and technology courses and 1 credit in an elective.
