The state of New York is one of the most highly populated states in the country, and therefore it has one of the largest public education systems. Additional information about education within the state and high school graduation requirements are included and summarized below.

High School Information in New York

The New York state graduation rate for students who started 9th grade in 2006 and had graduated after four years was 73.4%. This was an increase from 71.8% for the 2005 cohort. The state of New York is continuing to strive to better their public education system in order to increase the overall number of high school graduates over the next several years.

High School Graduation Requirements in New York

In order to obtain a high school diploma from the state of New York, students are required to complete 22 credits of coursework. The requirements, as established by the New York State Education Department, are broken down as follows:

  • Language Arts/English (4 credits)
  • Social Studies (4 credits including U.S. Government and Economics)
  • Mathematic s (3 credits)
  • Science (3 credits including life science and physical science)
  • Visual, Music, or Performing Arts (1 credit)
  • Health Education (.5 credits)
  • Foreign Language (1 credit)

Students will also need to complete coursework in technology and parenting.
