High School Information in Rhode Island

Schools in the state of Rhode Island must be sure that all students successfully complete a rigorous diploma program that gives them access to college or post-secondary training, whether immediately after high school or when and if they so choose. The new high school diploma system was developed in response to concerns from colleges and employers that high school graduates were not always well prepared for college and work. This new system is designed to help students think more creatively, solve problems, speak in public, work in groups, and apply their knowledge to real world situations.

High School Graduation Requirements in Rhode Island

Rhode Island’s high school graduation requirements are developed differently in other states. To earn a high school diploma, a student must demonstrate proficiency in six core areas by applying knowledge and skills at a rigorous level and those six areas are:

  • Science
  • Mathematics
  • Arts
  • Language Arts
  • Technology
  • Social Studies

Students must have also successfully completed two of the four following performance-based diploma assessments:

  • Certificate of initial mastery
  • Exhibition
  • Comprehensive course assessments
  • Graduation portfolio

Students must also complete a minimum of 20 courses including four years of English, four years of math, three years of science, and three years of history.
