Time management is often a difficult skill to learn for college students. College freshmen have a significant amount of freedom given to them all at once, and this often results in conflicts managing school work, part-time jobs, extracurricular activities, friends, and social outings. In some instances, students will spend more time focusing on the more fun activities and less on the more important educational work. Therefore, coming up with goals and a successful time management plan is essential in order for a student to succeed in college.

Time management systems have many benefits for students. They can help to reduce stress and anxiety, as they teach students to not wait until the last minute to complete assignments. It reduces the need for cramming for test, and that can also facilitate higher level of learning. Students that spend time each day studying perform better on tests than students that cram, and they retain more information in the long run. This can be extremely helpful for final exams.

Students need to develop a set of goals before identifying which time management techniques they are going to employ. Without those goals, it will be difficult for students to motivate themselves to follow through with their time management plan. Students should plan out each day and try to notice when they are being unproductive to break bad habits.

When it comes to studying, students should schedule fixed blocks of time to do school work and should review their lecture notes everyday. They should schedule breaks and make use of time before and after class. They should also set clearly defined start and end times for study sessions.
