Valve Installers and repairs maintain, install, and repair mechanical controlling and regulation devices, and these may include thermostats, safety and flow valves, electric meters, and gas regulators. These professionals may turn meters on or off to establish or close services or turn them to allow gas or air to pass through the meters at specified rates of flow. They may report hazardous field situations and damaged meters, and they can record meter readings and installation data.

These professionals connect regulators to test stands and watch gauges that indicate the outlet and inlet pressures. They disassemble and repair devices of mechanical control, which may include hydrants, regulators, or thermostats. They also record maintenance information, disconnect, or remove defective or unauthorized meters through the use of hand tools.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for one of these professionals in 2009 was $47,240, or $22.71 per hour. There is expected to be little or no change in the employment outlook for this field, and this will lead to about 6,800 job openings through 2018.
